May the 4th… Be With You – Why Star Wars Matters in English Education
メイ・ザ・フォース・ビー・ウィズ・ユー - スター・ウォーズが英語教育に大切な理由
なぜ5月4日は「スター・ウォーズ・デー」なの？これはファンが作った祝日で、「メイ・ザ・フォース・ビー・ウィズ・ユー」という有名な言葉を「メイ・ザ・フォース・ビー・ウィズ・ユー（5月4日）」というダジャレに変えたのが始まり。ファンのコミュニティから自然に広がり、ハリウッドのマーケティングではなく、世界的なイベントに成長しました。マラソン上映、衣装、英語圏の象徴的なフランチャイズへのオマージュが特徴です。
先週、キタラでジョン・ウィリアムズのコンサートに参加し、素晴らしい体験をしました。E.T.、ジョーズ（私の好きな）、ハリー・ポッター、そしてもちろんスター・ウォーズと、たくさんの思い出。アンコールではスター・ウォーズの「帝国のマーチ」を演奏し、指揮者がダース・ベイダーのコスプレで登場—忘れられない瞬間でした。

スター・ウォーズは英語圏の文化に深く根ざしています。映画、テレビ、流行の歌は英語を反映し、創造します。言語は教科書だけでなく、物語、ジョーク、伝統の中で生きています。この文化に触れることで、学生は英語を教科ではなくスキルや文化と捉えられるようになります。そのつながりがなければ、英語の豊かさを逃してしまいます。Fantastic Englishでは、英語教育の不足を補うため文化も教えています。
何ができる？家族で英語のショーや映画を見る—日本語字幕付きの音声英語が理想です。ストリーミングサービスで簡単に楽しめます。お子様と自分の好きだった洋画作品を共有してみてください—ミセス・Jが好きだったのはフォレスト・ガンプ（時代を超えた名作）とグリーン・マイル（それには驚きました）

May the 4th… Be With You – Why Star Wars Matters in English Education
Why is May 4th “Star Wars Day”? It’s a fan-made holiday, born from the pun “May the Fourth be with you” off the classic “May the Force be with you.” Starting in fan communities, it grew organically, not from Hollywood, into a global event with marathons, costumes, and tributes to the iconic English franchise.
Last week, we had the incredible experience of attending a John Williams concert at Kitara. So many great memories—E.T., Jaws (my favorite), Harry Potter, and of course Star Wars. For the encore, they played the Star Wars “Imperial March”—the conductor came out dressed as Darth Vader. It was unforgettable.
Star Wars is deeply rooted in English-speaking culture. Movies, TV shows, and popular songs both reflect and create English. Language lives not in textbooks but in stories, jokes, and traditions. Engaging with this culture helps students see English as a skill and culture, not a subject. Without this connection, they miss out on the richness of English. At Fantastic English, we also teach culture to address gaps in English education.
What can you do? Watch English shows or movies with your family—spoken English with Japanese subtitles is ideal. Streaming services make it easy to enjoy. Share your favorite foreign films from childhood with your kids—Mrs. J loved Forrest Gump (a timeless classic) and The Green Mile (that surprised me).
